 Costume Design

killers costume

The killer is more instantly recognizable and memorable due to the costume design. By eliminating identity and emotion, the masks or hidden faces still fear both audience and characters in the film.

The killer appears more realistic and menacing when dressed simply and everyday because it represents that there danger in everyday life. The SCREAM movie has character that disguised themselves by being themselves like friends or neighbors to then hide that they are trying to kill people in their circles.

The killer's personality or past is frequently reflected in the costume. dirty clothes and a hockey mask. Friday the 13, Jason the killer mother's obsession and childhood trauma are linked to the mask that conceals his abnormal face. His violent past and years of living alone are reflected in the torn, filthy clothing. Also dark hues are frequently used to allude to death, danger, and mystery.

Authority Figures

Common Costume are police, teacher, and security uniforms. Signifies safety or order in society; often weakened when they are not able to find the murderer. Sheriff Brackett from Halloween wears a police uniform to demonstrate his authority, but he is not always able to stop the characters

Other characters

Background characters side character dress usual or quirky not to out do the main characters.

The final

The victims usually have scars, wounds and blood on them to signify the death of others or the killer by showing blood. Ripped or dirty closed from the journey they took throughout the film of trying to survive.

 Target Audience

Learning what the target audience for slasher horror helps me know who will watch these films and why. So to make my film I need to do research on what the audience looks for and who will watch it.

formally the average slasher horror viewer is someone that enjoys horror films and can watch gory. Slasher horror is mainly killing and gory, so most viewers are people that can handle that.

Age group

primary audiences are teenagers and young adults, typically 15-30 years old. Slasher horror films have high stake situations, suspense, and relatable young character making them appealing to this age group
Movies like SCREAM and final destination franchise have young characters.

Gen z and Gen Alpha
these are people of the age 14-29. This is the audience usually watching slasher horror because its what they are interested in. The goriness, killing mystery, and they usually fascinate this over other genres.

Market Advertisement

The way slasher horror is advertise posters and trailers with the killers weapon or mask while also teasing the final girl. This makes the audience see what they might be getting into by what the film will be about. In trailers they show snippets of the threat and not the violence. Using shadows, slow steps, this makes audience imagine the worst. This makes viewers who want suspense, not gore. Terrifier 3  trailer shows goriness to indicate to it's target audience for the movie which is people that can handle a a lot of gore and killing with  weapons shown like a chainsaw.

Companies

Companies likes Blum house work with low budgeted, high concept horror with not as much gore to appeal to their younger audience that like smart horror and not gore. Another company is A24 that elevates artsy strong psychology slasher horror to appeal to fans that want depth and symbolism horrors. Movies from those companies that appeal to their audiences likes are The Purge and X. Companies make movies that they know their audience from the past have enjoyed and keep the concepts of other movies the same.

Overall
This helps me understand how to appeal to a certain target audience I will be filming for and other elements like level of violence and theme.

Software for film

In order to make my film I need a software to use. I'm choosing premiere pro to do my film on, but I would need to do research on it on how it works and make my film successful.

 Premiere pro

From Adobe is a professional video editing software that used in film, Tv, and digital media industries. it allows editors to cut, sequence, and manipulate video footage, apply visual effects, sound, design, color correction and transitions.

Why use this software

Other software is also good, but I prefer to do this software because I've used it before and I know a bit on how to use it to edit videos.

Key features

Timeline editing- layer multiple video and audio tracks, allowing precise control over cuts and sequencing

Transitions and effects - apply fades, wipes, and motion effect that are essential for building tension in horror

Color correction and grading- Adjust lighting and color to set mood, cold tones for fear or red hues for danger

Why use this for Slasher Horror

Precision Editing- allows tight control over suspenseful timing, essential for jump scares and pacing.

Integration of audio and visuals- Combines sound and visuals edits to enhance tension

Nonlinear editing- can rearrange scenes without destroying the original footage, testing suspense sequences.

Final thoughts

Learning more on techniques I can use for my slasher horror film, I've concluded that this software is what I want to use and create my film on.  I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Slasher Horror intros

I'm going to analyze intro scenes that correlate with scene I might do but mainly to understand the concepts and media tool used to execute an intro scene.

Intro scene of SCREAM 6 (2023)

The scene starts with a tense nighttime shot, but in a normal setting, the bar. This first part of the scene make it feel like a regular night, a first date.  The victim in this scene, the woman is waiting to check her phone and texting the man when he sends her text that he's lost.

The man asked to call her to help direct him to where they are meeting.  She starts helping by going outside and where he says he is to guide her towards him. The danger starts with just a phone call, not a knife. the killer uses directions, distance and voice to control the victim. The victim chooses to move in the danger. This shows various ways the killer can attack.

Shift in scenery

The setting shift from a public street to a dark alley. Still keeping the dark setting, it becomes more suspenseful with her trying to find a man and go searching. The camera shots may hint that someone might be following her or watching her. It also helps the audience see the setting and how scary it is for both of them watching and the character in the scene. This makes the audience feel tensions rising through visuals and audio, by having barely any dialogue.

The Kill

she then proceeds to navigate more into the dark alley when her date supposedly is in danger. It then reveals the killer was the person on the phone. she then gets jump scared by children running. Then killer approaches her by jump scarring her when she looks back at the alley and proceeding to stab her at the same time. she then is stabbing multiple time with a gory blood coming from the mouth. the killer is masked with black attire as his costume. he then is later revealed by taking everything off and leaving the scene. this unusual for a slasher horror for the killer to revel himself. it takes away the Ghostface rule that every scream movie does by unrevealing himself.

Facial expression

The victims face expression throughout the scene slowly changed from happy to scare. at the beginning she was happy for a date, but when she staring going where her date was lost, which was the alley, her facial expression changed to more of a scared look. This helps guide the audience in what she's feeling at that particular time. Then when she's gets more into the alley her face gets more scared and when she's gets more into the alley here face expression turns all the way into fear. this helps the audience see how she's feeling and tells the audience that she's not feeling comfortable and genially scared.

This is also paired with the commentary of the intro as well. As her face changes the man on the phone is saying that someone creepy is looking at him. This is her face in the second picture of her worried for the man. Then later it revealed the person she was talking to is someone else and scared who's she's been talking to this entire time.

this intro plays with the typical slasher horror where the killer reveals himself in the begining making us the viewers question what's really happening and is he the actual killer of this film.

Intro Scene of HELL OF A SUMMER (2025)

This intro is in a dark setting and two couples outside maybe camping with two lawn chairs and the man playing his guitar, toning it. This intro is all in dark setting with no light anywhere except their bonfire they are sitting in front of.

The couple are happy enjoying and joking between each other and then after she leaves to get more beers, leaving the man alone in the dark night in the woods.

It is then the man alone playing the guitar starring out towards the lake in front of him. The camera angles changes to behind him and the camera shaking like someone breathing, making it seem like there's someone behind him watching him.

she's at a fridge grabs the beers and the fridge closes of a pic of them together indicating that they are together. a magnet letter of x start falling down. That's probably added to indicate an execution or to foreshadow one's death.

she then is returning with no light and just the darkness of the woods to make it scarier. It then has a shot of the two chairs with no one sitting on it. This increases suspense because he's no longer where he was left. She then gets close and she stop and sees he's been killed with his own guitar because its shatter and inside him. This brings in the killer of movie.

she then runs up out of the woods to her car that their cabin is because the shot shows a building like a cabin in the back. she's putting the keys in the ignition and then it cuts to her view of the woods and back to her just staring intently in front.

it's her just starring for a couple of seconds and then a hand appears behind her seat in the darkness. her head start to go down, and a knife is behind the front seat head rest indicating she's been killed from her head.

The killer

The knife starts to come out slowly, and the killer is shown with a mask on sitting in the back seats. The killer than takes the knife out and hold it. This shows the viewers who the killer of the film will be and how he attacks.

This intro scene is the typical slasher horror opening with victims being killer and introducing the killer. this intro help the audience see who the killer is.

Intro scene reflection

After reviewing and analyzing how each intro is shot, I know what elements and what is used for my intro. This also shows me two different ways I can go about doing my intro, with revealing or not revealing the killer.

Technical elements for Slasher Horror

Lighting

The lighting in slasher horror is often dim or completely black to create a suspense and fear. Shadows hiding threats or killers and the darkness makes viewers and character scares to anticipate danger. Sudden spotlights in a killer or reflections off a blade makes danger visible in dramatic moments. These alert viewers to danger while keeping suspense. Some films mix lighting as well. Everyday places, like a home, with dark spaces, like a basement or woods, to unsettle the scenes, making familiar spaces feel unsafe.

Color Theory
slasher movies use cold lighting like blue, green, grey tones to make the scenes
feel empty, unsafe, and emotionally distant. this also makes the space feel unnatural or lifeless. Warm lighting like yellow, orange, and red tones make it comfort, normal life, or false safety. using this color can tell where a character feels safe at.

This shows two different scenes of a killer and a group of kids sitting out a house party. Here is a clear different in the colors.

Camera movements

Slasher horror uses many different camera movements to make each scene have suspense, tension, fear, and point of view. This tells audience who has the power in a scene, who's in danger and when something bad is going to happen.

Slow tracking

The camera moves forwards or sideways through a space this builds suspense and makes it feel like someone is watching. This makes anticipation and dread what will happen.

Point of view

The camera shows exactly what a character sees, often the killer, this makes the audience inside the threat, creates discomfort and males attack feel personal.

There are many more, but the camera movements help control pacing, guide emotion and visually communicate danger with what the camera shows.

Sound/ audio

Sound in slasher horror film are not just background support. It builds fear. Audio is crucial for suspense and emotional manipulation in films.

Non-Diegetic Sound

This is music characters cannot hear but the audience can. eerie music warns the audience of danger before it appears on screen. Sudden loud sounds are paired with jump scares to shock viewers and make emotional impact. Films use slow, rhythmic music during stalking scenes and sudden musical hots during attacks.

Diegetic Sound

This is real sound in the scene. Footsteps, breathing, doors, weapons, and environmental noise. This makes isolated sounds make the killer feel closer than they are, amplify everyday noises increase realism, and familiar sounds become threating when heard alone or repeatedly. These sounds heighten tension by making danger feel physically near, when its off screen.

Silence

Silence is one of the most powerful audio techniques in horror. this makes silence a fear tool. Silence slows time and increases awareness, and viewers anticipate a scare, increasing stress and fear. This can be music cutting before an attack, ambient sound fading away during a stalk, or silence broken suddenly by violence or loud noises. Jump scares feel intense because silences lowers both characters and viewers
 guards.

Sound is design to signal danger before it is seen, making an effective element in slasher horror.

Editing

Editing in slasher horror films affect tension, suspense and pacing. It does not just show events but controls what the audience sees.

Control pacing and time

Long takes scenes increase suspense by making the audience wait and watch for danger. Rapid cuts during attack can simulate chaos and disorientation that can mimic victims panic.

Builds suspense and anticipation

editing can pick and delay the reveal the killer or threat through timing. Editing like holding shots on empty hallways, cutting away just before the attack, or showing reactions instead of action.

Manipulates perspective and point of view

It can show whose eyes the audience see through. POV editing can show viewers the killer by stalking shots or the victim fear and vulnerability. Shifting POV through cuts create empathy, tension, or unease depending on what the audience is seeing.

Jump scares and shock moments

A scene can show calm shots that are long then a sudden cut paired with sound to shock viewers and show and create jump scares.

fonts

Slasher horror uses specific font for the title of the film like distressed and grungy font. Scratched, cracked, broken fonts are common. jagged and sharp fonts suggest violence or sharp objects like knifes.

The font size is large font to draw attention to headings or key points. usually bold, italic and caps.
The color stands out of the background. Red, white, black for danger, unease, mystery look.

Trajan font is important and intense. It comes from the Roman inspired, all caps serif font. It gives the vibe of cold/emotionless, serious. the color commonly used ae dark tones, blood accent, and faded white. Shadow to add depth and tension. Textures scratches, cracks, or grain.
