Reasearch- Slasher Horror

 Slasher horror

I’m very excited to state that slasher horror is what my film will be based on. After researching different genres, I have eliminated to know I feel will be the best and fun theme to film.

As you have seen I did do research on this genre, but I fear I might need more in depth. See what I did there. Fear, anyways let’s learn more of what I would need to execute this genre.

Setting- where is slasher horror filmed?

Usually filmed in isolated, everyday places to make the danger feel more real.
Mists common places are:
Camps and forest (summer camps, woods, lakes)
Quite streets
High schools, campuses
Motels, hospitals, warehouses
Small towns

WHY?

No help, easy to stalk victims, traps a lot of characters in one place, isolation and limited escape.

Common Character:

There is the killer and the victims of course. The killer is often males, silent, or mysterious (Michel Myers) There is at times what they call the final girl. The last survivor who fights back and escapes (Tara & Sam Carpeter)

Michel Myers (Halloween).         Tara and Sam Carpeter (SCREAM)

Slasher Horror is a type of horror genre that focuses on a killer who stalks and murders people one by one, with a close range weapon like knifes or other sharp objects. They show fear of danger in everyday life, loss of safety, and consequences of bad choices. Film that represents does situation are Fear Street and Sick.

Reasearch- Exploring Horror Sub Genres

Exploring Horror Sub Genres

I have now got my genre that my film will be based on. Now I would need to know go deeper and find a sub genre that I want. there are so many that horror has that comes to mind. I so far have come up with three subgenres that I think would be interesting to do. Phycological horror, Comical horror.

Phycological Horror- This sub genre scares audiences by using mind games rather than jump scares. It focuses on fear, anxiety, paranoia, guilt, and mental breakdowns. This horror makes viewers question what is real by using unrealizable narrators, hallucinations, or intense emotional stress. this genres is completely different from the regular horror movies. It reflects human fears. Movies like Black Swan and Get Out use atmospheres and character psychology to build fear over time.

Slasher horror- Focuses on human killer who stalks and murder individuals or group of people, usually one by one.  The fear part comes from the suspense, anticipation, and the vulnerability of the characters survival.  The villain in the movies usually are masked to cover them self’s from being revealed, (SCREAM). Others don’t and it became more of a personal killing,(I know what you did last summer). The setting is at a small town, camps, isolated place. It has know evolved to youth vulnerability, violence, social fear.

Comic horror- This genre uses comedic lines and uses horror characteristics into a humor way. This is to use comedy to balance fear and suspense. These films often parody horror to exaggerate scares or create funny situations along with frightening people. Movies like Scary Movies, Heart eyes. This allows audience to experience in a  less intense, funny way. It still plays with the horror convention like jump scares, ridiculous monsters, a comedic villain, to create mix of tension and laughter.

After exploring the different sub genres of horror, it became clear to me that slasher horror stand out the most to me. Unlike the others it relays and real world fear and I like that I can combine different elements like suspense, fear, and making places feel unsafe to put into my film.

Research

3 Genres of Consideration

Welcome back to my blogs, I am now starting my journey to making my film!

Im now starting my reasearch process of my opening film. Coming up with genres that I wanted to do was a bit hard because there are so many that I enjoy watching. I narrowed it down to ones that I enjoy to watch and think will be fun to produce. I wanted it to be something i know a bit on and my partner would agree with. The three genres i considered are thriller, romance, and horror.

Thriller- this genre uses concepts of excitements ,tension, intensity to create suspension and make the audience want to know what happening next. Also keep the audience emotionally engaged by placing characters in dangerous and high pressure situations. Thriller focuses on the anticipation of each event of a film Everywhere minor details contributes to the big plot. The film Parasite (2019), halfway through the movie there was a major reveal that surprises the audience and turn the film into a much darker thriller. Thriller uses placed details and clues to often lead to major plot twist or for the storyline.

Character play a major role because they are placed in position to where they are in situations that would make the audience feel the pressure with the character. The Menu, barbarian, Don’t worry darling are other movies that had plot twist with high suspension.

Romance- This genre focuses on love, emotional connection, and relationships between characters. Most tend to have a romantic story about a male and female characters falling  in love in different ways. Romance narratives often center on emotional conflicts and using moments of tension to keep the audience engaged.  This genre has character growth between them and themselves.

At the end of each romance, most of the time the resolution of the film is the couple together. Movies such as Crazy Rich Asians, To all the boys I’ve loved before, Love, Simon all have conflict between couples or character and an ending with each couple together but with lessons learned or conflict that had solutions. Romance whole point is to show a relationship forming with people.

Horror- A genre that’s creates fear, tension, and suspense. It’s like thriller but scarier because of jumps scares, gore, and darker setting to portray a more dangerous and unsafe surrounding. The genres strong emotional reactions are fear, anxiety, and shock. This genre could include real world fear, monster, and anything that is twisted in a dark scary plot like the Hatching and Mogadishu. Horror mainly focuses on the atmosphere and emotion. Dark setting, silence, suspenseful music, slow reveals, and jump scare. Blum house a successful horror company that produces horror film in different sub genre. I do like their way of making movies so this company I do find interest in and would inspire me to come up with a horror film that not to scary and gory.

Final Genre
After doing all of this research on each genre I was considering. I have chosen to do horror. Me and my partner both agree on this and I personally thinks it's going to be a fun to produce.   I would like to film suspense into characters and portray a dark atmosphere while putting a bit up jump scares in it.Developing a more darker film opening will be tuff but with the information I have so far, I think I have a good summary of what key concepts would be needed and expected in the film.
