Reasearch- Exploring Horror Sub Genres

Exploring Horror Sub Genres

I have now got my genre that my film will be based on. Now I would need to know go deeper and find a sub genre that I want. there are so many that horror has that comes to mind. I so far have come up with three subgenres that I think would be interesting to do. Phycological horror, Comical horror.

Phycological Horror- This sub genre scares audiences by using mind games rather than jump scares. It focuses on fear, anxiety, paranoia, guilt, and mental breakdowns. This horror makes viewers question what is real by using unrealizable narrators, hallucinations, or intense emotional stress. this genres is completely different from the regular horror movies. It reflects human fears. Movies like Black Swan and Get Out use atmospheres and character psychology to build fear over time.

Slasher horror- Focuses on human killer who stalks and murder individuals or group of people, usually one by one.  The fear part comes from the suspense, anticipation, and the vulnerability of the characters survival.  The villain in the movies usually are masked to cover them self’s from being revealed, (SCREAM). Others don’t and it became more of a personal killing,(I know what you did last summer). The setting is at a small town, camps, isolated place. It has know evolved to youth vulnerability, violence, social fear.

Comic horror- This genre uses comedic lines and uses horror characteristics into a humor way. This is to use comedy to balance fear and suspense. These films often parody horror to exaggerate scares or create funny situations along with frightening people. Movies like Scary Movies, Heart eyes. This allows audience to experience in a  less intense, funny way. It still plays with the horror convention like jump scares, ridiculous monsters, a comedic villain, to create mix of tension and laughter.

After exploring the different sub genres of horror, it became clear to me that slasher horror stand out the most to me. Unlike the others it relays and real world fear and I like that I can combine different elements like suspense, fear, and making places feel unsafe to put into my film.
